Sick Leave

For the better part of a week now, Lindsey has had pneumonia. This has resulted in a rather nasty cough that is uncontrollable and quite frankly sounds downright painful.

So, a few nights this week I slept on the couch because the coughing was keeping me awake.

This reminded me of those times when I was a kid, when I would get sick and my parents would finally break down and give the go-ahead for me to stay home from school. I would usually sleep on the sofa the night before, and stay there the entire school-day.

Nothing felt better than staying on the sofa all day, drifting in and out of consciousness under the influence of some serious cold medication.

Every time I stayed home from school I would watch The Price is Right at 11:00 in the morning, and I loved it. Then I would drift off again and wake up in the middle of some crappy soap opera. Seeing that, I would fall right back asleep until it was time for the cool after school shows like Saved By The Bell, The Brady Bunch, Gilligan’s Island, and (of course) Thundercats.

By the end of that first day I usually felt better, but I wanted more TV time. Unfortunately that never happened. Staying home from school for two straight days at my house meant that you were bleeding and the doctors couldn't make it stop, or a bone was broken.

But there was always next time to look forward to.

Those really were great days.
