Comments Wanted !

Every morning I go to a local cafe for a cup of coffee or two, and I do a little reading, or maybe some writing.

Often times I go back for coffee in the afternoon or at night with Lindsey.

That's upwards of two or three times a day.

I always order the same drink: grande medium roast coffee. Sometimes I get the paper and sometimes I get a muffin for breakfast.

There is a tip jar at the counter.

Now, I NEVER carry cash. Since the proliferation of the debit card, I find cash useless and pointless most of the time. On the slip they give you to sign with the debit card, there is a spot to leave a tip.

My question is this: should I tip the person that serves me? I order a drip coffee. All the server has to do is turn around, hold the nozzle until the cup is full, turn around again, and give it to me. And it's not as if I'm a pain to put up with. I am always extremely courteous and kind to them if it is appropriate, and if it seems like he or she is "having one of those days" I keep quiet and try not to bug them.

I know these guys make at LEAST minimum wage, and in some cases more. These days, I make more than that, but all the way through college I worked in numerous service positions, and NEVER got tipped for it. Movie theater concession...nope. Bank teller...nope. Record store associate...nope. I never got tips and only at the bank did I make any more than minimum wage.

If I ordered a pain in the ass to make drink like a latte, I would probably tip, but this is drip coffee!

I would also like to mention that I am not a cheap bastard, and I am far from rich. I've still got debt to pay off from school. And I over-tip waiters and waitresses most of the time. I feel bad for those guys, especially when you can tell that they are overwhelmed.

So, should I tip my coffee server? What do you guys do?
